Reigate Manor

A disastrous act

Today in 1914, Gavrilo Princip murdered Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne and his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg in Sarajevo.  Princip was a Bosnian student and member of the Serbian secret society "Black Hand.”  The murder was the immediate cause of World War One, which lasted from 1914 until 1918.  Apparently, there were six conspirators in addition to Princip, who were all armed with bombs and pistols with each possessing a capsule of cyanide.  Security for the motorcade appeared to be limited: no soldiers were used, although approximately 70,000 were billeted just outside of the city.  The policemen numbered only 120 for a procession route of four miles.

A complex web of alliances, coupled with the miscalculations of numerous political and military leaders (who either regarded war as in their best interests, or felt that a general war would not occur) resulted in an outbreak of hostilities among most of the major European states by early August 1914.  Austria-Hungary held Serbia responsible for the murder and declared war on 28 July.  Before armistice came at 1111 on 11 November 1918, almost 15 million people had been killed, including 60% of soldiers who fought, with many more being injured and maimed.  World War I changed the face of modern warfare, becoming one of the deadliest conflicts in world history.

Today, by contrast, we enjoyed a spirited and informative presentation and Q&A from Heike Knip, who raised many thoughts about nurodiversity.

Book in now for our next meeting on 12 July, the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, though our focus will be on discussing what the newly elected government - and there will be one on 4 July - needs to do for small business and society generally.  In addition, we shall enjoy a Q&A session from Chris Webb.

You cannot afford to miss this event - book in now.
